A Bloggers Life
Who just thinks about beautiful people with a huge wardrobe, posing in front of a camera and drinking Starbucks coffee all day long when hearing the word fashion blogger is totally wrong. A fashion blogger has more than one job, but many . Not just model, but also photographer, web designer, SEO agent, social media manager, location scout, stylist and makeup artist. Sounds a lot? It is! But let’s start at the beginning:
Most fashion bloggers take care of their blog alone so they do have to take care of their styling alone as well. Somebody who is a fashion blogger probably is passionate about styling, but it isn’t as easy as it sounds to put new outfits together each time. Especially when you are rather a beginner and there are not 100 sponsors in your back giving you new clothes. Most bloggers start their project when they are still in school and do not have enough money to get new clothes every day. My advise: Go through the wardrobe of your best friend and see if she has something you can use for your next outfit!
Probably we all have our very special morning routine, for some people this takes very long, for some it doesn’t. If you are a blogger you need to change this routine completely. The normal day makeup is not enough for pictures used in a blog post, because you can’t really see it. Especially when you are not a real pro using Photoshop the makeup is elementary. The eyes need to be darker than normal and it is important to use some powder and blush.
I guess this point is probably the clearest. Of course modeling is very important when you take outfit pictures and it is not as easy as it maybe seems. Everyone knows some poses he or she just loves. But it is really boring having the same poses in every post. So you have to get inspired and try new things which can lead to a shooting of 2 hours. When time passes you get more routine. The most important: You have to feel good. Everyone will notice if you didn’t feel comfortable during the shooting. Most of the bloggers always have a very serious face, try to laugh sometimes, that looks nicer and more welcoming for your readers!
The best outfit and photographer can’t make a great picture when the location sucks. (Excuse my language) The location needs to support the look. It is not supposed to distract and has to be rather light. There are a thousand things you have to think about when you choose your location. The easiest way is it to choose something close to your flat. Then you have the possibility to come back and change and shoot more than one outfit in a row. But most of the times it is nicer to choose a special location and take your time to shoot one outfit at a special place.
One of the most difficult thing about being a fashion blogger is to find a good photographer. My boyfriend shoots most of my outfits, but after a while he got pretty annoyed by me always asking him to get off the couch. A really nice option is to look for other blogger in your city and sometimes even in your neighborhood.
It is important to have at least basic knowledge in photography. You should know where are the differences between lenses and what’s the ISO or the F-stop.
Further you need to know haw to use picture editing software. A not edited picture is not a good picture, it can never be as good as one which is edited. To edit takes about 1-2 hours per shooting, but you will find your routine and your favorite look and get faster soon.
Though many blogger are using a template which is ready to use and concept their blog on that basis, many things have to be worked out individually. You have to install many plug-ins, change colors, create logos and even single images. Further a blog is a growing project which needs to be renewed every now and then and sometimes things even break. The ones who do not want to engage a very expensive professional have to figure out what’s wrong on their own. HTML and CSS are quite easy to learn, but you have to do it and that means effort and time.
Very important for a good blog are not just nice pictures, but good texts! The best pictures are not going to make your blog successful if the texts are bad, not interesting and full of spelling mistakes. Content is king! Who does not write good content, does not get any clicks, is not interesting.
Imagine all texts are written, photos are shot and the layout is ready as well, then it is the SEO-agents turn. SEO – or Search Engine Optimizing – means to optimize your texts for Google. This will increase the ranking for the blog on Google. Many blogs are found by readers who used Google and so it is important to ensure Google reads the posts and puts them together with the right keywords searched on Google.
Social Media Manager
Everything is written and published, but how do people get to know about it? That’s the moment when the social media manager comes into the game. Bloggers use mainly Facebook and Instagram as social media networks. Both channels are really time intense. To reach more people on Instagram it is advised to post three times a day and like as much as you can. Facebook is rather used to teaser new articles and spread them in groups. That’s a great option to reach a bigger audience!
It takes some time until a blog post is ready tob e published or is going to be successful. I hope you have got an idea now of what is going on behind the scenes of a fashion blog!
